Ms. Gunnlaugsson joined Exxon Shipping Company in 1991 as a U.S. merchant marine deck officer responsible for safe navigation and operations onboard Exxon’s crude oil and chemical product tankers. Over a thirty-plus year career with ExxonMobil, she gained experience in operations, risk management, fuels value chain optimization and business development as well as human resources and talent management.
She spent seven years at sea and advanced her U.S. Coast Guard licenses to Master, ships of 1600 tons, and Chief mate, ships of unlimited tonnage. In 1998, she moved ashore with SeaRiver Maritime, Inc (formerly Exxon Shipping company) as a financial and operating analyst and held a variety of positions within SeaRiver, from business development and planning to human resources and labor relations.
In 2011, Ms. Gunnlaugsson joined ExxonMobil Refining & Supply Company in Fairfax, Virginia where she held a variety of roles, including leading U.S. products supply operations which ensured reliable gasoline, diesel and jet supply across ExxonMobil’s marketing portfolio. In 2008, Ms. Gunnlaugsson moved to ExxonMobil’s headquarters in Irving, Texas where she held advisory positions in investor relations, safety and environment, and corporate strategic planning.
In 2018, she was elected as Vice President, Human Resources, Exxon Mobil Corpoation, where she was accountable for human capital management, including talent strategies, employee and leadership development.
She was elected to her current role as President, Global trading in June 2023.
Ms. Gunnlaugsson has a bachelor’s degree in marine transportation from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York and a master’s degree in management from Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island. She was also commissioned officer in the U.S. Naval Reserve for eight years.
